Scenic trail to the Portofino Lighthouse from the piazzetta: timing, elevation and what to see along the way.
The Portofino Lighthouse is the village's most iconic walk: 30 minutes of gentle climb among olive trees, pines and views over the Tigullio, to one of the most photographed viewpoints in Italy.
The route step by step
Start from the Portofino piazzetta and take the paved climb past San Giorgio church. The partly stepped trail crosses Castello Brown's garden and continues through broom and holm oaks to the tip of the Capo.
Modest elevation, doable with children, but wear closed shoes: the cobbles can be slippery after rain.
What to see along the way
Midway along the trail, a small terrace frames the Tigullio gulf perfectly with Santa Margherita Ligure in the background. A stop at Castello Brown is well worth it, a 19th-century mansion with 270° views and temporary exhibitions.
The lighthouse itself can't be entered, but the outer terrace hosts a small bar perfect for a sunset aperitif.
Practical tips
Park in Santa Margherita Ligure or Paraggi and reach Portofino by bus or boat: in high season the village is closed to private traffic.
For Tigullio guests, it's a perfect half-day to pair with lunch in the piazzetta or a visit to the Cervara Abbey.
